  1. Adult Woman - Antenatal Clinic

Zandspruit is also providing weekly medication, vitamins and a meal to over 2400 moms-to-be annually. Here they also receive comprehensive education and care in HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Emthonjeni run an Ante- Natal clinic on Mondays and Thursdays weekly where we consult with approximately 200 pregnant mothers per month. During this visit we examine the unborn baby and mother, provide vitamins and feed the pregnant mother. Mothers are educated in sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS and other relevant pregnancy issues.

Explanation of Needs:

1. Medicine:
We are currently receiving a sponsorship of R 50,000 per annum from one of our Partners. The budget for the following financial year will have to be increased to R 120,000.00, as we have doubled the admission figures from 200 to 400. The sponsor has indicated that we have to find a sponsor for the additional amount and may be unable to ensure the current grant for 2007.
2. Sexual disease and AIDS training:
Video footage of breastfeeding, baby care etc in both Sotho,Tswana
and Zulu
3. Examination area:
A s this is a private conversation, many mothers shy away from answering pertinent questions relating to her sexuality in front of a crowd of people.

Privacy is most important to obtain the correct information:
Desks, tables, partitioning, four draw filing systems with pockets and dividers is a necessity.

A Midwifes salary to see all the patients and a Doptone to listen to babies’ heart is very necessary.

4. Medical Professionals

- A Radiologist and/or used Sonar to check the progress or abnormality of the unborn baby. Our midwife has the necessary qualification and training to use the equipment.
- Our midwife is in the process of obtaining a dispensing license and will be able to dispense antibiotics shortly. An R 2,500.00 sponsorship, to pay for the medical dispensing license of the midwife.
- Additional permanent staff to increase the current consultation rate, as we are making use of volunteers and part time staff at present.
- The Government Clinic in the area covers this service locally, but they do not have the necessary manpower to cope with the current influx of pregnant mothers. We need to investigate partnering with the local Government departments or the Department of Health, to receive the necessary grants.

Objective:

Our Clinic offers the Antenatal clinic, as any Government Clinic in the area does not offer it. Our consultation figures have doubled almost every year since inception and we have been forced to open the clinic an additional day each week to assist with the additional influx. The growth potential is huge, as we are at present, only assisting 10-to15% of the pregnant mothers in the immediate vicinity.

2. Optometry

Professor Jannie Ferreira of the University of Johannesburg’s Optometry Department has tested 1200 children at the Mashakane School situated in Zandspruit and is providing glasses for each child in need, at a total cost of R150.00 per set.
